Heavy + Medium Duty Clutch Product Training

What Does A clutch Do?

A clutch is the disconnect switch between the engine and the transmission.

  • Pedal down: it separates the engine from the driveline so you can start the truck, stop without stalling, and shift gears.

  • Pedal up: it clamps the engine to the transmission so engine power flows to the wheels.

In one line: it lets you smoothly start, stop, and shift while controlling how power is transferred.

What types are there?

Easy Pedal

What it is: A clutch designed to reduce pedal effort. Think driver comfort, less fatigue, smoother control in traffic.
Why it matters: Less leg strain, easier takeoff, better day-to-day drivability—especially for stop-and-go routes.

Solo Self-Adjusting

What it is: A clutch that automatically maintains proper adjustment as the disc wears.
Why it matters: It keeps engagement feeling more consistent over time and reduces maintenance-related adjustment issues—when installed and set up correctly.

Simple rule:

  • Easy Pedal = feel and comfort

  • Solo = consistency and reduced maintenance

Fast ID

Assume no VIN. Don’t guess

The 6 things you need every time

• Year, make, model
• Engine make and model, plus horsepower and torque rating
• Transmission make and model, plus transmission tag photo
• Clutch size – 14 in, 15.5 in, 430 mm
• Input shaft spline count and diameter
• Actuation type – Hydraulic release system or mechanical linkage

If they don’t know the engine or transmission

Ask for one of these (in order)
• Photo of the engine emissions label
• Photo of the transmission tag
• Photo of the old clutch cover tag or any stamped numbers
• Last repair invoice or parts receipt

Quick ways to confirm what’s on the truck now

• Ask what came off
– Was it self-adjusting
– Did you adjust linkage or free play

• Check part numbers
– Clutch cover tag
– Service invoice or prior repair order
• Ask about the symptoms
– Heavy pedal, slipping, chatter, hard shifting, grinding
– The complaint helps identify the real cause and the right spec

Counter script to get the right info fast
“Since we don’t have the VIN, I just need engine and transmission info plus clutch size and spline. If you can text a photo of the trans tag or the old clutch tag, we’ll spec it right and avoid a wrong order.”

Spec It Right

The method that prevents wrong orders and wrong returns

Goal
Match the truck, match the release system, match the duty cycle, then choose the right clutch style

Step 1 Confirm fit first

If any of these are wrong the clutch will not work
• Clutch diameter 14 in 15.5 in 430 mm
• Input shaft spline count and diameter
• Transmission make and model
• Flywheel type and condition requirements
• Release system type hydraulic or mechanical

Step 2 Confirm the release system

This decides the correct clutch style and prevents comebacks
• Hydraulic release system
– Use the clutch style designed to maintain proper adjustment through wear
• Mechanical linkage
– Choose based on customer preference and maintenance habits

Step 3 Confirm engine torque and duty cycle

This keeps you from selling a clutch that gets smoked early
Ask these two questions
• What is the engine torque rating
• Is this linehaul highway or vocational stop and go heavy starts

Use this simple guide
• Highway miles steady starts
– Standard duty clutch is usually fine when matched correctly
• City delivery dump roll off construction towing hills heavy starts
– Spec severe duty and confirm correct friction style for the work

Step 4 Choose the value upgrade

You are not just selling a part you are solving the complaint
• Heavy pedal driver fatigue stop and go
– Sell Easy Pedal style for comfort and control
• Customer wants consistency fewer adjustment issues fleet standard
– Sell self adjusting style when appropriate for the release system
• Comeback risk high multiple drivers rough use
– Push severe duty and a complete kit

Step 5 Lock the order with proof

Without VIN you need one hard confirmation before you place the order
Pick one
• Photo of transmission tag
• Photo of the old clutch cover tag part number
• Photo of the old disc showing size marking
• Prior invoice with clutch part number

Red flags stop and verify

Do not order until you get a tag photo or old part number
• Customer does not know clutch size
• Customer does not know spline count
• Customer is mixing parts from a swap or different transmission
• Hydraulic vs mechanical is unknown
• Truck is vocational severe duty and they want cheapest option

Counter script

“Since we do not have the VIN I need transmission model clutch size spline count and whether it is hydraulic or mechanical. If you text me the transmission tag or the old clutch tag we will spec it right and avoid a wrong order.”
